The organization's goals
Education and instruction are two conditions for an economic and social
developement.
Education enables the children/people to participate in democratic
processes as well as political decisions. Basic knowledge is
fundamental and essential for these processes.
This is why it is an urgent necessity to contribute to the
literacy of girls and young women especially on India's countryside.
Besides that, the poverty in Bihar is high as well.
To literate girls at the age of nine to twelve on the indian
countryside is the main target of Maedchenschule Khadigram e.V.
Girls belonging to families of sheduled casts, Dalit (untouchables) and
Adivasi (tribals) shall be given the chance of basic education. We want
the girls to attend school for four years to get a basic knowledge.
The schools provide accommodation, which is necessary due to the long
distances between the school and their parent's houses.
Furthermore the girls get clothes, because as a rule they are dressed very insufficiently and do not possess clothes to change. Regular meals and medical
care are included, of course. At present, it is not possible to keep
the children in school for more than four years. One reason is that
the organization needs more money, what is not available at the moment.
The other point is, that the families would not agree, because they
need their daughters capacity for work at home.
According
to the United Nations about 10 percent of India's girls carry out very hard
work for approximately ten hours a day. The parents are illiterate
themselves and do not understand why a longterm education for their
daughters should be necessary. Sending the girls to school for three
years is a first and very big step for them. Not only because they lose
the capacity of work but also because they lose control.
During
the three years in school the girls shall learn to read and write
texts, solve small mathematical problems that occur in everyday's life.
Furthermore they shall be enabled to live their lifes independent, use
their influence on their surrounding, to go to the polls independantly.
Through this the young women gain self confidence and by that the girls
rise in their social reputation, like it is for example in Punjab,
Kerala or Tamil Nadu.
The number of children that are born and infant mortality is directly
connected with the mother's basic knowledge. If the mother has a basic
school knowledge, her children will be better taken care of.
In
consequence the young women may reach a larger self determination and
achieve personal freedom and liberty. Thereby it will get more easy for
them to fight old traditions, cast standards and involuntary dowry
marriage, which often take place in the age of ten to twelve years,
although it is forbidden by law.
The UN calls this form of marriage ceremonies a kind of slavery.
The
possibility of further steps is opend by a minimum of basic knowledge.
The organization works hard to contribute to this development.
There
is no doubt that illiterate people can easily be manipulated by any
person, group or party. To avoid this is the organization's goal.
